2-1. General. This section contains safety precautions for all aspects of paint handling and operations
except for stowage. The storage of flammable and combustible liquids shall meet the requirements of
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, NFPA 30.
2-2. Painting Operations. The two most important factors with regard to a safe painting operation
concern responsibility and training. Their importance shall be firmly established and clearly understood by
all supervisors and personnel handling or applying any materials.
a. Responsibilities. At the level of actual operations, line supervisors are responsible for all operations;
the gas-test and safety personnel are responsible for providing staff assistance to the line supervisors.
The responsibility factor is also particularly important at those supervisory levels where painting work is
coordinated with other types of work.
b. Training. Commensurate with their responsibilities and participation, all personnel connected with
these operations shall be made aware of the hazards associated with the handling and use of flammable
materials, as well as the appropriate safety precautions. This information shall be part of each individual's
job training.
