d. For examination of the anchor windlass, reference paragraph 1 thru 8.
2-44.  Sanitary Inspection. The passenger and crew quarters, toilet and washing spaces, galleys, serving pantries,
lockers, including all black and gray water systems, should be examined to be assured that they are in a sanitary and
operable condition (U.S. Public Health Service Requirements).
2-45.  Sound Power Telephone System. Evaluation of sound powered telephones can be made by means of a sim-
ple physical test. Their effectiveness in transmitting intelligible speech cannot, however, be so easily determined, since
human talkers and human listeners are involved in these tests. The results obtained are subject to considerable variabil-
ity. The operation of the system shall be observed to determine that voice reproduction is of good quality and of a high
order.
2-46.
Engine Order Telegraph Systems.
a. When inspecting a mechanical telegraph system for operation, a close examination shall be performed on
the telegraph wire, pulleys, turnbuckles, chains, penetration through watertight bulkheads, rollers and watertight enclo-
sures.
b. Inspection of vessels equipped with an electric telegraph system shall consist of an examination of the wa-
tertight enclosures of the electrical components, the alarm device, and the power supply. It shall also be determined if
the transmitter handles, pointers, and all reply pointers are synchronized.
2-47.  Load Line. The load line marks when placed on a vessel, indicate the maximum amidships draft to which such
vessel can be lawfully submerged. The surveyor should determine that there have not been alternations made to the hull
or superstructure which would affect the calculations determining the position of the load line. The American Bureau of
Shipping (ABS) certification of US Army watercraft for retention in class is not required; however, US Army Watercraft
will meet ABS requirements for loadline markings. When inspections are required for assignment or indorsement of
loadlines, the services of the ABS will be employed.
2-48.  Painting. Detailed requirements for the painting and marking of US Army floating equipment are outlined in
Technical Bulletin, TB 43-0144 Painting of Vessels which will be used as a basis for writing vessel painting specifications.
Marking and labeling will conform to MIL-M-117745B "Marking and Labeling of US Army Marine Craft."
