f.  The surveyor shall require that the amount of wear in the tail shaft and stem bearing be determined. The
bearing shall be replaced when the clearance exceeds the established standards (Table 2-2) .
g. The propeller struts shall be inspected for alignment and cracks.
h. Sea chest, bilge ejector valves shall be opened, cleaned and inspected for condition.
i.  The rudder pintle bearings and rudder post shall be inspected for wear (Table 2-3). The rudder pintles and
gudgeons shall be inspected for wear and cracks. The rudder main piece shall be inspected for wear and cracks. The
hollow rudder shall be air tested to insure water tightness with compressed air to 3 to 5 PSI. Repairs to rudders are ac-
complished through application of standard metal working practices.
j.  The bottom of the hull from the deep load line down shall be inspected in accordance with Sections I, II, III
and IV of this technical bulletin.
2-55.  Hull Zincs. Zinc protector (anodes) are attached to the vessel's hull and appendages in order to reduce gal-
vanic corrosion. The zinc protectors shall be replaced at the scheduled drydocking of the vessel. At unscheduled dry-
docking, the zinc protectors shall be replaced if the zinc has deteriorated beyond 50 percent of the installed size.
2-56.  Steering Apparatus. The main and auxiliary steering apparatus shall be tested by operation and the surveyor
should examine the mechanism throughout its length.
a. The steering gear shall be capable of putting the rudder over from stop to stop (Port and Starboard) in a free
and easy manner with the vessel running ahead at the maximum continuous rated shaft RPM, in accordance with the
builder's plans and/or steering gear manufacturers' instruction.
b. The auxiliary steering gear, where power driven, shall be capable of putting the rudder over from 15 on one
side to 15 on the other side in 60 seconds with the vessel running at half speed, or seven knots, whichever is greater.
c.  Examination of the chain-cable type steering gear shall consist of inspection of the sprocket wheel, steering
wheel shaft, roller chain, wire cable, clamps, pulleys and turnbuckles.
d. The electro-mechanical steering gear examination shall consist of inspection of the electric steering unit, wire
rope transmission, miter boxes, limit switch, sheaves, cable, actuating chain, gears, clutches and other mechanical parts.
