NOTE
Special attention shall be given to communitation/slip ring and brush wear.
2-63.  Switchboards. Switchboards shall be inspected for handrails, guard rails, working space, insulating floor cov-
ering, drip covers, inclosures for backs and ends and identifying nameplates. Circuit nameplates should be compared
with the rating and setting of the overcurrent devices.
The operation of automatic switch gear and mechanical interlocks should be observed.
2-64.  Rotating Electrical Machinery. Rotating electrical machinery shall be examined to assure that rotating and/or
uninsulated electrical parts are adequately shielded from accidental contact by personnel.
2-65.  Motors and Motor Starters. Motor starters shall be examined to assure proper starting of the motor under
service conditions and to assure that properly rated overcurrent devices are installed. Motors, motor starters and control
switches used with machinery vital to the safety or propulsion of the vessel should be visually examined for condition and
suitable nameplate ratings. When there is evidence of deterioration, they shall be opened for closer inspection.
2-66.  Panelboards. The rating or setting of the overcurrent devices shall be compared with the values given on the
circuit directory. The accuracy of the directory description of loads served by each circuit should be checked.
2-67.  Grounding. It shall be determined that metal inclosures for electrical equipment are grounded, either by the
method of mounting or by ground leads. Portable equipment shall be examined for grounding through the grounding
conductor of the supply cable.
2-68.  Storage Batteries. Storage batteries used for emergency lighting, diesel engine driven emergency generator
starting, general alarm, and similar systems should be tested for operation.
2-69.  Emergency Lighting. The adequacy of emergency lights and exit lights should be checked with all general
lighting turned off.
2-70.  Watertight Equipment. An examination shall be made of all electrical equipment exposed to the weather or
located in spaces where they are exposed to the seas, splashing or other severe moisture conditions for watertightness.
2-71.  Explosionproof Equipment. An examination shall be made to assure that explosionproof equipment is capable
of withstanding an explosion which may occur within it, or to prevent the ignition of a specified gas or vapor surrounding
the inclosure.
2-72.  General Alarm System. An operational check of the general alarm system should be conducted to determine
the sound level of the alarms
