throughout public places, work spaces, crew quarters and machinery spaces. Normally, the sound level of the alarm
system should be not less than 75 decibels relative to 0.0002 microbars at 1,000 hertz (zero db); or a sound level of 6
decibels above the ground (operational) noise level existing when the vessel is underway in moderate weather, which-
ever is the higher.
SECTION XIV. Fire Protection Equipment
2-73.  Firemain System. The surveyor shall examine and witness the testing of the firemain installation to determine
the capability of delivering an adequate supply of water to any position of the vessel quickly for the purpose of combat-
ting fires.
a. Assure that the pumping capacity has no seriously deteriorated. This can be accomplished by comparing the
stop down pressure against the builders' plan.
b. Operate valves, pumps, etc., to assure that the firemain system is in good working order.
c.  Assure that the relief valve is set to operate properly. The relief valve should be set to relieve at 25 PSI in
excess of the pressure necessary to maintain the requirements in paragraph 71a or 125 PSI whichever is greater. Relief
valves are usually omitted from the system if the pumps operating under shut-off conditions, are not capable of devel-
oping a pressure exceeding this amount.
d. Examine the firemain and ascertain that no connections, other than those specifically permitted, are installed
to the firemain.
