APPENDIX F
SPECIFICATION FORMAT
SECTION I. Introduction
F-1.
The information and examples contained in this appendix provide explanations, instructions and guidance to help
the specification writer prepare a standard format specification.
SECTION II. Standard Format For Specification
Item(s) Preparation
F-2.
For many of the various types of U.S. Army Marine Equipment and Class/Designs of Army Watercraft, an al-
ready proven Specification Item, i.e., those items that will normally always be included in the specification package as
required under the reoccurring maintenance cycle, are used and have been continuously purified over the years.
F-3.
Contained in the following pages are illustration/samples along with instructions and procedure explanations for
the preparation of a Specification Item (Definite).
a. Total coverage here for item preparation would be too lengthy, therefore, the Surveyor must remain flexible as to
what should or should not be included.
b. In the preparation of Specification Items, everyone concerned should make a constant effort to purify each item
which will result in a better end product.
F-4.
Where an Indefinite Item, other than those standard or normally reoccurring Indefinite Items which are included
in the Cyclic Maintenance Specification Package, is required, the standard Indefinite Items are to be used as a prepara-
tion guide in these special cases.
F-5.
For Specification Items not covered in F2, F3 or F4 above, for special or unusual types of items, a research of
Specification Pack- ages in the Office Permanent Historical Files will often contain an item which can be used as a
preparation guide.
F-6.
Items written to Open and Inspect for Determination of Repairs and/or Materials, Parts Replacement should al-
ways be worked on a priority basis.
F-7.
Abbreviations and Signs should be avoided in specification writing as the Specification Items are part of a Legal
Contract Package between the U.S. Government and a Commercial (Ship Repair) Contractor and every effort should be
made to keep Specification Items as clear as possible.
F-8.
If questions arise, see your Supervisor.
