3-91.4. CRANKSHAFT TIMING GEAR - MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS.
a. The crankshaft timing gear is bolted to the flange at the rear end of the crankshaft and drives the
balance shaft gear through an idler gear.
b. Since the camshaft must be in time with the crankshaft, timing marks are located on two teeth of the
idler gear with corresponding timing marks stamped on the crankshaft gear and camshaft and balance shaft
gears (refer to paragraph 3-91.2).

The flywheel housing and flywheel must be removed to perform the following
maintenance instructions.
REMOVAL
1. Crankshaft
a. Crank-
Peen the outside diameter
Gear
shaft
of the seal until it
rear oil
stretches sufficiently
seal (1)
so it can be slipped off
of the crankshaft.
