RELAPPING
a. The Mechanical Seal (24) and the Stuffing Box Gland (22) must be relapped prior to installation or
replaced.
b. The carbon seal face/stationary seat in a new condition, should have a perfectly lapped face. If the
seal is
slightly marred, (no large scratches, chips, etc.) it is possible, by relapping, to recondition the seals.
To
accomplish relapping, the following materials are essential: a true surface, which can be either a
lapping
plate or a sheet of plate glass; lapping paper, which could be No. 600 Minnesota Manufacturing
Company
grinding paper, or an approved equal, and a work bench, which should be clear of debris.
c. The following steps should be followed to assure successful lapping:
1. On a clean bench, lay the true surface flat.
2. Air-blow the true surface and back of lapping paper to remove foreign material.
3. Place lapping paper on true surface, and hold firmly with either hand.
4. With your other hand, grab the seal/seat, and, being careful not to drop same, place it on the
lapping
paper-face down.
5. With a firm grip, and an even, light pressure, move seal/seat in a figure eight pattern for a total of
five
complete figures. Be careful not to rock or tip element during this process. Further, this process
should
be accomplished with- out releasing the grip of either hand.
6. Rotate element approximately 90 and repeat Step 5.
,
7. Repeat Step 6 until such time as the face is cleaned up.
8. Carefully wipe off using very clean, soft cloth which has been saturated in solvent.
9. Position piece in stuffing box immediately to avoid redamaging face.
