WARNING
Corrosive battery electrolyte contains potassium hydroxide. Wear rubber gloves, apron,
and face shield when handling leaking batteries. If potassium hydroxide is spilled on
clothing, or other material wash immediately with clean water. If spilled on personnel,
immediately start flushing the affected area with clean water. Continue washing until
medical assistance arrives.
a. Clean batteries and terminals with a
solution of water and baking soda and
wipe dry.
b. Keep batteries filled to proper level
with distilled water. Maintain elec-
trolyte 3/8 inch above separators.
c.
Test the specific gravity of each cell
with a hydrometer, and compare reading
to chart in TM 9-6140-200-14. If the
specific gravity reading is below 1.225
on the hydrometer. If the specific
gravity reading is below 1.225 on the
hydrometer, charge the battery. Specific
gravity readings of 1.260-to-1.270 on
the hydrometer indicate a fully charged
battery.
