TM 55-1905-223-SDC
STABILITY AND BUOYANCY
SDC FIXES SHALL BE USED ONLY IN COMBAT OR OTHER EMERGENCY
CONDITIONS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE VESSEL MASTER. DAMAGE SHALL
BE REPAIRED BY STANDARD MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES AS SOON AS
PRACTICABLE.
Section I. INTRODUCTION
5-1.
PURPOSE. The purposes of this chapter are to explain the stability characteristics of the Landing
Craft Utility (LCU) insuring the ship will be seaworthy in the intact condition and to discuss the capability of the
ship to survive the greatest practical amount of underwater damage. In this regard, the LCU is a single
compartment ship, meaning that a satisfactory condition of reserve buoyancy exists after flooding of any one
compartment.
Section II. DEFINITIONS
METACENTER. In this discussion, the term "initial stability" refers to the tendency of the ship to right

itself when inclined to small angles of heel, under 7 degrees, for example.
To facilitate the determination of initial stability, the concept of metacenter is introduced. With the ship
at a given draft, the metacenter is the point of intersection of two successive lines of action of the force of
buoyancy as the ship is inclined through a very small angle. In FIGURE 5-1, point M designates the initial
metacenter, that is, the intersection of the buoyant force at 0 degrees with the line of action of buoyancy at a
small angle (Θ) away from 0 degrees. The distance GM between the center of gravity (G) and the metacenter
(M) is called the metacentric height.
