TM 55-1905-223-SDC
6-23.  FIREFIGHTING CONTROL STATIONS.  In the event of a major leak or fire in the machinery space,
the machinery space HALON or FM-200 release, machinery space ventilation, and fuel pump shut down may
be controlled from the Firefighting Control Station located on the Main Deck, Starboard Passageway about
Frame 38.
Section XII. HALON and FM-200 and WATER WASHDOWN (WWS) SYSTEMS
6-24.  GENERAL - HALON.  HALON 1301 Fire Extinguishing systems are provided for the Machinery
Space and the Paint Locker. Upon activation, ventilation is automatically shut down so HALON will not be
extracted from the space. There is a 60 second delay before the HALON is actually released to facilitate
evacuation of the space.
a.  Paint locker system. HALON can be released into the Paint Locker by pulling the CO lever on
the CO cylinder (which is located under the stairs just outside the Paint Locker door), or from the remote pull
box location (which is on the bulkhead just starboard of fire station number 5 about Frame 12) by pulling the
handles in both boxes. The paint locker system consists of a 72-pound cylinder filled with 64 pounds of
HALON and charged by a 50-pound CO cylinder. Both of these cylinders are located under the ladder just
outside the Paint Locker door. There is also a single pressure operated siren which will sound upon
activation to alert personnel to evacuate the space.
b.  Machinery space system. HALON can be released into the Machinery Spaces by pulling the CO
lever on the CO cylinder (located on the forward bulkhead of the Emergency Generator Room about Frame
43) or remotely at either of the two pull box locations (one on the Main Deck, starboard companion way and
one on the Main Deck, forward bulkhead of the superstructure) by pulling the handles in both pull boxes.
The Machinery Space System consists of two 340-pound cylinders, each filled with 280 pounds of
HALON and charged by a single 50-pound CO cylinder. All of these cylinders are located on the forward most
bulkhead of the Emergency Generator Room. There are also two pressure operated sirens (one in the Control
Room and one in the Machinery Space) which will sound upon activation to alert personnel to evacuate the
space.
6-24.1. GENERAL FM-200.  FM-200 (1,1,1,2,3,3,3) Heptafluoropropane is a compound of Carbon,
Fluorine and Hydrogen (CFCHFCG). It is colorless, odorless, and electrically non-conductive. It suppresses
fire by a combination of chemical and physical mechanisms without affecting the available oxygen. FM-200 is
clean, leaves no residue, thereby eliminating costly after-fire clean-up, and keeping "down time" to a
minimum. FM-200 is stored in steel containers, at 360 PSIG, 70 (25 bars at 21C), as a liquid, with Nitrogen
added to improve the discharge characteristics. When discharged, the FM-200 liquid vaporizes at the
discharge nozzles and is uniformly distributed as it enters the fire area. FM-200 is approved for total flooding
fire extinguishing applications in occupied spaces by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
appears on the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) list of acceptable substitutes for ozone depleting
substances. FM-200 is also on the clean halocarbon fire extinguishing agents listed in the National Fire
Protection Agency (NFPA) 2001 Standard, Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems and is approved for
marine application by the US Coast Guard (USCG).
The FM-200 Total Flooding Fire Extinguishing Systems on LCU-2000 consists of five (5) manually actuated
systems.
a. Engine Room. This manually actuated system is designed and installed to protect the Engine Room
and bilge (3-25-0-E), Frames 25 to 44. The physical location of this system, less FM-200 distribution piping
and nozzles, Electric Horn/Strobes, and Warning Lights (Amber Strobes), is installed outside of the protected
space. The engine room system is a split cylinder bank arrangement that consist of two (2) 600-pound
cylinders and one (1) 350-pound cylinder. The two (2) 600-pound cylinders are filled with 363-pounds of FM-
200 agent and are charged by a 25-pound CO2 cylinder. Both cylinders and supporting components are
installed on the forward bulkhead, Frame 42 1 2, A/C and Emergency Generator Room (1-43-0-E), provide
protection for the Engine Room and bilge. The 350-pound cylinder filled with 251-pounds of FM-200 agent
and supporting components are installed on the 7'0" off centerline longitudinal bulkhead, Starboard side,
Frames 23 to 24, Tunnel (3-17-0-Q), provide protection for the Forward Engine Room
(MCC/Storeroom/Machine shop areas) and bilges. The FM-200 actuation stations are located in two
independent locations, main passageway outside of engine room entrance door at frame 40, and on the
deckhouse centerline, forward at the well deck on bulkhead 28.
