f. In the event of an injury occurring to the Ship Surveyor assigned to a Contractor's plant or work area, the Sur-
veyor shall immediately seek medical aid and first aid treatment in the following sequence of priority:
(1)
U.S. Public Health Hospital or Out-Patient Clinic
(2)
U.S. Army or Naval Hospital
(3)
U.S. Government Contract Doctor
(4)
Private Practitioner
1-6. Definitions. For the purpose of this bulletin the following definitions apply:
AMPHIBIAN - Vessels/vehicles capable of operating on both land and water and craft capable of logistics over-the-
shore operations.
ATHWARTSHIP - Across the ship, at right angles to the fore and aft center line of a vessel.
ANNEAL - To relieve locked up stresses by heating and gradual cooling.
BILGE KEEL - A fin fitted on the bottom of a ship at the turn of the bilge to reduce rolling. It commonly consists of
a plate running fore and aft and attached to the shell plating by welding or by angle bars. It helps materially in steadying a
ship and does not add much to the resistance to propulsion if fitted in the stream line flow. Sometimes called rolling
chocks.
BILGE STRAKE - Course of plating at the bilge.
BULWARK - The strake of shell plating above a weather deck. It helps to keep the deck dry and also serves as a
guard against losing deck cargo or men overboard.
BINDING STRAKE - A strake of planking fitted next to and under the sheer strake.
BUTT - The joint formed when two parts are placed edge to edge; the end joint between two plates.
BUTT BLOCKS - Blocks between frames, reinforcing a planking joint.
COFFERDAM - Narrow empty space between two bulkheads that prevents leakage into adjoining compartments.
CATALYST - A chemical which causes atomic reaction of plastics and activates polymerization or cure. Different
plastics require different catalysts.
DECK BEAM - Athwartship support of deck.
DECK FREEBOARD - (a) Deck to which freeboard is measured. (b) Deck above which bulkheads need not be
watertight. (c) The water- tight deck. Also called bulkhead deck D.
