(2) The new portion should be in good alignment with the adjoining old portion. Particular care should be
exercised in this regard in way of flanges.
SECTION V. Inspection of Vessel Internal Structure
2-5. Internal Structure Inspection.
a. There are certain hazards in connection with vessel repairs and surveys, such as, excessive gas deposits, stale
air and insufficient oxygen in tanks, voids, cofferdams, peaks, cargo holds and engine rooms in dead ships.
b. The Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, Part 1501, Safety and Health Regulations for Ship Repairing and
Title 46, Part 35.01-1 for Tank. Vessels, Part 71.60-1 for Passenger Vessels and Part 91.50-1 for Cargo and Miscellane-
ous Vessels, specifies that personnel shall not be permitted to enter, engage in repairs or operations, involving cold or
hot work or alterations to any of the vessel's systems before the areas are free of concentrations of combustible or flam-
mable liquids, vapors, gases and chemicals and are properly ventilated.
c. A qualified marine chemist will determine when personnel are permitted to enter areas involving repairs, op-
erations, hot or cold work or when alterations to the vessel can be undertaken with safety. He will also determine that the
applicable minimum requirements have been complied with to his satisfaction.

b. An overall examination of the hull of a wooden vessel which has been in service can give the surveyor a gen-
eral idea of the portions where deficiencies can be expected. Distorted planking, pulled butts, local damage and unex-
plained wetness or weeping are tell tale indications. Particular attention should be paid to stern and transom area under
the covering boards, wind and water area and around hull
