that all protective devices are being adequately maintained. Particular attention shall be paid to guards which will pre-
vent personnel from coming into contact with dangerous electrical currents. The engineer or other ship's personnel in
charge of the machinery should always be asked whether there are defects or imperfections in the equipment, boilers or
machinery of the vessel.
2-50.  Heating Boilers. The inspection of the boiler shall include the examination of the physical structure with a view
to determine its adequacy in service.
a. All heating boilers shall be given at least one internal and external inspection biannual intervals.
b. The external inspection should not require any particular preparation. The inspection should comprise of the
boiler and its appurtenances and connections while the boiler is in service. Careful inspection shall be made for cracks,
broken stays, pitting, corrosion, erosion, scale and thin pieces. The steam space shall be examined particularly for signs
of grease, oil, or similar deposits. The interior of the tubes and the space between the tubes shall be examined for scale
and deposits.
c.  If fusible plugs are used, they shall be in good condition and not used for more than one year. When the
boiler is open, scrape clean and bright the exposed surfaces of the fusible metal, as well as the surface of the boiler near
the plug. If the fusible metal does not appear sound, renew the plug.
d. The surveyor shall examine the boiler for alignment, noting whether or not there has been any tendency to
settle loss of level or plumb, or abnormal movement, and the condition of supports.
e. Examination shall be made for evidence of corrosion on the exterior of the boilers.
f.
Careful examination shall be made of the safety valve or valves, their connections to the boiler, drains and
supports.
g. Boiler appliances such as gage glasses, gage cocks, water level controls, low-water alarms or cut-offs, and
feed valves, shall be examined and tested. Boiler pressure gages shall be checked with other reliable gages in the same
system or should be compared with a properly calibrated test gage.
h. A steam pressure gage is one of the most important operating guides available to the operator and shall be
tested for accuracy. A steam pressure gage should be considered tested when it has been compared and made to agree
with a test gage which has been so tested.
i.
Water glasses and their connections shall be inspected for leaks.
