TB 55-1900-201-45/1
e. The electro-hydraulic steering gear examination shall consist of inspection of the hydraulic pumps, electric
motors, hydraulic ram, piping, valves pinion gear, and rock.
f.
Examine and test the components of the emergency tiller.
2-57. Rudder Angle Indicator . An inspection of the rudder angle indicator shall consist of an examination of the
electrical wiring, the transmitter and it should be determined if the movement of the indicator pointer is consistent with
the movement of the steering wheel.
2-58. Engine Inspections . On condition surveys, an external examination can only be made to the main and auxiliary
engines and other machinery.
a. Engines are seldom opened for inspection prior to entering a repair facility. Indications of overheating,
missing components, oil leaks, crankcase pollution, contaminated cooling system, evidence of leaky water pumps,
clogged intake screens, missing guards and inoperative gages are some of the visual signs of engine condition.
b. If possible, performing a compression test on each cylinder, operating the engine and observing tempera-
tures, pressures, exhaust, vibrations, foundation bolts and engine mounts will indicate condition of the engine.
c. With the engine operating, shifting the reduction gear fore and aft should give some indication of the condi-
tion of the reduction gear.
d. Reduction gears will be opened as considered necessary in order to permit the examination of the gears,
gear teeth, spiders, pinions, shafts and bearings (Table 2-4).
2-59. Refrigeration Machinery. An examination of refrigeration machinery shall consist of an inspection to ascertain
that the chambers and drain pipes are clean, that the cargo battens (where fitted) are in good order and that the insula-
tion and refrigeration pipes have not sustained damage. A test of the refrigerating machinery under working conditions
shall be witnessed and the temperatures in the various chambers noted.
a. Liquid and gas piping together with their respective valves, the receivers, separators, condensers and evapo-
rator coil terminals shall be examined externally as far as practicable.
b. The insulation shall be carefully examined, particularly under line of decks and side stringers, in order to de-
termine fullness or dryness. The cargo gratings, and drainage arrangements should be examined. All hatches, air tanks,
thermometer tubes, ventilator coamings and deck connections should be examined and where air trunks pass through
watertight bulkheads, the watertight doors should be worked.
