may be moved if deemed necessary. Connect a suitable hose, etc., to flow water overboard or to other safe location
from the selected outlets. Systematically remove other sprinklers and plug other openings to further test as necessary.
Operate pumps, discharging water through the selected outlets, to assure that the lines are free of obstruction. (Flush
with fresh water after testing).
b. Visually examine all open sprinklers to determine that they are free of obstruction.
c.
Operate control valves and verify that they are properly marked.
d. Open drain traps to eliminate any water trapped in the system.
e. Verify that dirt traps are not clogged or obstructed.
f. Determine that approved sprinkler heads are used. The orifice diameter of the sprinkler head should be 3/8
inch. Other, larger diameter should not be accepted unless specifically approved on the vessel drawings.
2-77. Water Spray Systems. There is no line of demarkation between sprinkler systems using standard sprinklers and
water spray systems. The primary differences are in water discharge pattern, water velocity, density of water application
and water droplet size.
a. Water spray nozzles shall be an approved type and must be the same type as indicated on the vessel draw-
ings.
b. Water supply (pump capacity) shall be tested by operating the water spray system and the fire main simul-
taneously. The minimum pressure at the most remote spray nozzle should be 50 PSI.
c. The water distribution pattern of the spray system shall be tested. This may be accomplished by entering
space as the system is operated. If the system is operating properly, the space will be filled with a dense water fog.
(Flush the system with fresh water after testing).
d. Following the flow test of the system, the line strainer and all nozzle strainers shall be examined and deter-
mined to be free of obstructions.
e. Examine the location of control valves. They should be near the fire pump or convenient at one of the main
escapes from the spaces
f.
Complete, but simple, operating instructions shall be posted near the controls.
