(2) Use a suitable cleaner to remove the rust preventive compound from the unpainted surfaces.
(3) If required, paint the engine in accordance with TM 43-0139, Painting Instructions for Field Use.
(4) Refill the crankcase with clean lubricating oil. Flush and fill the cooling system. Install DCS (Diesel Coolant
Additives) precharge elements to the water filter heads. These will be exchanged with service elements at the first oil
change.
b. Inspection.
(1) When an engine has been stored for 6 months or less, it is necessary to adjust the injectors and valves,
tighten the cylinder head capscrews and connections, and replace the filters.
(2) When an engine has been stored for 6 months or more, the following procedures must be followed in
addition to the above:
(a) Flush the fuel system with clean fuel oil until all preservative oil is removed.
(b) Remove a plug from the oil gallery and force hot, light mineral oil through the oil passages to flush away
all preservative oil. Bar over the engine crankshaft three or four revolutions during the flushing operation.
(c) Actions stated in paragraph b. (1) above.
(d) After inspecting the engine and parts, make sure all the preservative oil and accumulated deposits have
been flushed away. Start the engine as described in paragraph 2-5(b) and (c).
