3-148.2. OIL FILTER (BY-PASS), HOSES AND HOUSING - MAINTENANCE
INSTRUCTIONS.
a. An oil filter of the by-pass type is installed on the engine. However, the size of the orifice on the
discharge side of the filter must not exceed .062 inch (.217 cm) to control the oil flow rate and to provide
sufficient oil pressure when the engine is running at idle speed.
b. When the engine is running, a portion of the lubricating oil is bled off the oil gallery and passed
through the by-pass filter. Eventually all of the oil passes through the filter, filtering out fine foreign particles
that may be present.
c. The by-pass filter assembly consists of a replaceable element contained in a shell mounted on a
combination base and mounting bracket. When the shell is in place, the filter element is restrained from
movement by a coil spring at the top. A hollow center stud serves as the outlet passage from the filter as well
as securing the shell in place.
