TESTING (Cont)
c.
Hold the live end of the remaining lead approximately 1/8 inch from some exposed
part of the engine. Do not hold the lead too near the spark plug port because the
escaping fuel mixture may be ignited.
d. Pull rapidly on the starter handle to crank the engine. If the magneto is operating
properly, a spark between the lead and the engine will be visible. Repeat operation
for the other spark plug lead.
2. Spark plug
The condition of the spark plug can be checked in the plug same manner by attaching the
leads to the spark plugs, grounding the shell of the plugs against an exposed part of the
engine and cranking the engine rapidly. Weak or intermittent sparking at the spark plug is
often caused by the following conditions:
a. Corroded, pitted or improperly adjusted breaker points.
b. Defective condenser.
c.
Defective ignition coil.
d. Faulty electrical connections.
e. Faulty insulation, or a breakdown between the ignition system and the radio
shielding.
