(2) The breaker point surface becomes pitted after a long period of service and after a
long period of idleness the surfaces may become oxidized. Both conditions prevent
proper operation of the magneto and result in a faulty spark at the spark plug. To
function properly, the breaker point surfaces must be clean and smooth, and may be
cleaned in the following manner:
(a) Carefully spread the points with a small screw driver, and insert a point dresser.
A strip of fine sandpaper folded back to back may be used for a point dresser.
(b) Release points and work point dresser up and down until point surfaces are clean
and smooth. If points do not clean up easily, replace the points.
(c) Insert a strip of clean, stiff paper, and remove any traces of corrosion or point
dressing material which may have adhered to the point surfaces.
