APPENDIX E
RECOMMENDED REPAIR FACILITIES,
TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT
E-1. GENERAL. This appendix describes the recommended repair facilities, tools, and equipment for
repair and maintenance of the F530 IAB.
E-2. RECOMMENDED FACILITIES. Facilities for F530 IAB repair should have adequate size,
environmental control, lighting, and services, as described below.
a. Facility Size. The facility should provide room for two boats, benches, worktable storage
and tools. A work area of 26 feet by 20 feet will allow one person to work on two boats. If possible, the
facility should be located near the water for in-water testing. A separate wash and leak test area should
be available. Depending on the volume of work and the suitability of working outdoors, a spray paint area
should be considered. An office area for administrative work and files should be provided.
b. Environmental Control. A ventilation system that provides a complete change of air a
minimum of three times per hour is necessary to extract glue and solvent vapors. The extractor vents
should be located near the floor because the solvent and glue vapors are heavier than air and will fall and
accumulate near the floor. Humidity control may be necessary in some regions. The gluing operations are
to be conducted at less than 75 percent relative humidity.
c. Lighting. The facility should be well illuminated from above and from the sides by
fluorescent lights.
d. Services. Services should include standard 120 VAC electrical outlets near the work area
and all worktables. Low-pressure compressed air for spray painting and cleaning is desirable. Running
water is required at the boat wash and leak test areas.
e. Storage. Approved storage for flammable solvents and glues is required. Glues must be
stored at a temperature of 40 to 80F.
E-3. RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT. The following equipment is recommended for the F530 IAB
repair facility.
a. Craft Support Benches. A minimum of four benches, two per craft, is recommended to
support the craft at a convenient working height. The benches can be fabricated easily from wood. Each
bench should be 6-1/2 feet long by 11 inches wide by 18 inches high.
b. Work Tables. Three to six worktables are required for scuffing, gluing, cutting fabric and
valve repair. These tables should be approximately 8 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet high. The scuffing
table should be located in a separate area to avoid contaminating the gluing and valve repair operations
with avoid contaminating the gluing and valve repair operations with the neoprene dust. The scuffing table
must have a neoprene foam top covered with heavy-duty hypalon neoprene fabric.
