a. One keel cooler is provided for each of the diesel generators (see Figure FO-19). Both keel coolers are
recessed into the hull. Each keel cooler is insulated from the hull with neoprene insulation. Integral expansion tanks are
provided with engines. Filling of the cooling systems is made through the fill caps in the tanks. Fresh water can be
supplied by hose from makeup connections in the Forward and Aft engine rooms. Vents are provided on all backup
expansion tanks.
b. Valves on the cooling and return lines of each generator diesel engine allow use of the keel cooler or cooling
coils in the ballast tanks to cool the circulating water for the diesel engine.
c.  The coils in the ballast tank provide cooling for the generator engines. The ballast water temperature is 120F
(48.8C). Isolation gate valves are installed in the cooling coil lines. These valves are open at all times except during
repair periods.
