1-58. BOW RAMP WINCH.
a. The Bow Ramp Winch (Figure 1-59) consists of a single drum with dual grooves wound opposite hand for two 7/8
inch diameter wire rope lines, mounted on the slow speed shaft of a helical gear reducer, with an outboard anti-friction
bearing. The outer flange of the drum has ratchet teeth which engage with a pawl pivoted in the frame. The pawl is
engaged and disengaged by a hand lever which can be locked "IN" or "OUT". The inner drum flange is equipped with a
manually operated hand brake. The winch is driven by a motor connected to the reducer high speed shaft by a torque
limiting clutch coupling set for approximately 200%o of the normal load. The motor has a spring- actuated solenoid-
released, disc brake, integally mounted.
b. The Winch is controlled by a magnetic reversing starter, with a pushbutton operating station at Starboard on the
Forecastle Deck. There is a remote station in the Pilothouse and a master station in the winch area. A slack cable limit
switch is provided to de-energize the motor in case the cable goes slack because of overtravel or in the event of a "hang-
up". A hand crank safety switch is also provided to prevent electrical operation when the hand crank is engaged.
