b. General Rubbing Stake Replacement Procedure.
( 1 ) With a silver pen, trace around the rubbing strake before removing it.
( 2 ) Unglue the rubbing strake using a heat gun as described in appendix F.
( 3 ) Lightly scuff the craft fabric to remove old glue.
( 4 ) Lightly scuff the new rubbing strake surface that will be glued to the craft. (If an
old rubbing strake is to be reinstalled, scuff lightly to remove old glue.)
( 5 ) Remove all dust.
( 6 ) If necessary, reposition the rubbing strake and retrace the outline with a silver
pen.
( 7 ) Tape 1/16-inch outside the traced line.
( 8 ) Begin the gluing schedule (table F-1) using toluene solvent and neoprene glue.
( 9 ) Remove all tape.
( 10 ) Roll the rubbing strake glue side out. This requires two people due to its length.
( 11 ) Carefully position the end of the rubbing strake in position on the craft. Slightly
pull it as it is pressed into position.
( 12 ) Slowly unroll the rubbing strake pressing it into position on the craft. Reactivate
the glue two feet at a time, when required.
( 13 ) The rubbing strake must be smoothed into position before being boned down.
Smooth it into position by rubbing it with a towel dampened in toluene. Failure
to smooth it into position before boning can result in it changing shape.
( 14 ) Firmly bone down the rubbing strake into firm contact with the craft fabric.
( 15 ) Wait 48 hours before using the craft to allow the glue to develop sufficient bond
strength.
