Section VI. PREPARATION FOR STORAGE OR SHIPMENT
3-17. Administrative storage of equipment issued to and used by Army activities
will have preventive maintenance performed in accordance with the Preventive
Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) charts before storing. When removing the
equipment from administrative storage, the PMCS should be performed to assure
operational readiness. Prepare fire pump units or components for shipment or
limited storage in accordance with the following instructions.
a. Pumps should be completely drained and dried.
b. Shaft extensions and other exposed machine surfaces should be coated with
an easily removable rust preventive.
c.
Place a corrosion inhibitor in the pump casing such as Gulf No-Rust Engine
Oil, Grade 3, which conforms to MIL-L-21260.
d. Cover pump units and motor to protect them from weather and direct
sunlight.
e. Either allow proper ventilation or tightly seal cover with a suitable
amount of desiccant to ensure dryness.
f.
Storage locations for pumps that are near a source of vibration must be
avoided.
g. Care should be taken to prevent extremes in temperature (below 32 and

above 110 ).

h. Shafts should be rotated 10-15 times 2 or 3 times a month while in
storage.
i.
If pump units and motor are to be in extended storage, repeat preparation
procedures every 6 months.
