TM 5-1940-321-13&P
NOTE:
The paint coating should consist of three coats. Normally, if the paint coating
is not deeply damaged, only the top paint coat is removed and replaced during
maintenance. A new craft will require a minimum of two coats of paint.
( 5 ) Inspect the transom, thrustboard, and paddle for area where paint is flaked or
worn away. Sand these damaged areas with 100 grit (medium) sandpaper until
smooth. Do not remove the paint unless the paint is damaged or flaked.
( 6 ) Remove all sanding residue by wiping with a towel lightly dampened with paint
thinner. Allow to dry for 20 minutes.
NOTE:
A new craft required a thorough, light sanding of the factory applied finish. A
special paint is used when the craft is built. This factory paint does not bong well
to other paints. A thorough sanding with 180-grit sandpaper is required.
( 7 ) Using 1800grit (fine) sandpaper, sand all surfaces of the transom, thrustboard,
and paddles lightly. If the craft has not been painted outside the factory, sand
all of the factory paint very thoroughly with 180-grit sandpaper. Sand until a
smooth, uniform appearance is achieved. Do not remove paint that is in good
condition. It is not necessary to sand the paint down to bare wood unless the
paint is flaked.
( 8 ) Remove all sanding residue by wiping with a towel dampened with paint
thinner. Allow thinner to dry for 20 minutes.
NOTE:
Allow paint to cover 1/4 inch of the fabric glued to the transom and thrustboard to
provide a seal against moisture entering the glued joint.
( 9 ) Using masking tape, cover areas that are not to be painted.
NOTE:
The transom and thrustboard are painted flat black. The paddles are painted flat black.
