a. Painting Frequency. The transom, thrustboard, and paddles must be painted annually.
This procedure is performed by direct support maintenance personnel. The paint provides a protective
coating that prevents these wooden parts from deteriorating. Paint in poor condition allows moisture to
enter the wood. Moisture in the wood can cause the fabric attached to the wood to become unglued and
also result in delamination and rotting.
b. Paint Procedure. Paint the transom, thrustboard, and paddles in accordance with the
following procedures:
Thinning solvents and paints are flammable. Their fumes are toxic. Avoid
sparks and flames. Work outdoors or provide adequate ventilation.
( 1 ) Remove the outboard engine from the craft, if installed.
( 2 ) Remove the outboard engine mounting plate from the inboard side of the
transom. Retain the mounting screws.
( 3 ) Remove the nine paddles from their stowage sheaths.
( 4 ) Using the scrub brush, bucket, and detergent, thoroughly wash the paddles,
transom, and thrustboard. All grease and oil must be removed. Pay particular
attention to the transom. Rinse well with water and allow to dry.
