GENERAL CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING
SOLVENT CLEANING COMPOUND
MIL-PRF-680 is flammable and may cause irritation to the eyes or skin. Wear protective
goggles and gloves; avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Use in well ventilated areas
and keep away from heat or flame. Failure to comply may result in personnel injury or death.
Accidental ingestion can cause irritation of digestive tract and respiratory tract, and may
cause lung and central nervous system damage. Can be fatal if swallowed. First aid for
ingestion: do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention.
First aid for skin contact: remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and
water. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
First aid for eye contact: flush with water for 15 minutes or until irritation subsides. If symptoms
persist, seek medical attention.
Inhalation of high/massive concentrations can cause coma or be fatal. First aid for inhalation:
move to fresh air. If not breathing, provide artificial respiration. If symptoms persist, seek
medical attention.
Keep away from open flames and other sources of ignition. Failure to comply may result in
serious injury or death to personnel. The flash point for type II solvent cleaning compound is
141 to 198F (61 to 92C) and type III is 200 to 241F (93 to 116C). Fire extinguishers should
be placed nearby when using solvent cleaning compound.
Improper cleaning methods and use of unauthorized cleaning solvents may injure personnel
and damage equipment.
Cloths or rags saturated with solvent cleaning compound must be disposed of using
authorized facilities procedures.
Eye shields must be worn when cleaning with a wire brush. Flying rust and metal particles
may cause injury.
Failure to comply may result in injury or death to personnel.
Deposit Removal. After soaking parts in solvent, wash away deposits by flushing or spraying. Where necessary,
brush with a soft bristle brush moistened in solvent. Use compressed air to dry all parts, except bearings. Bearings
must be allowed to air-dry.
Tools. Do not use scrapers, wire brushes, abrasive wheels, or compounds in cleaning parts, unless called for in
detailed instructions.
Rubber Parts. Do not clean rubber parts in solvent cleaning compound. These parts should be wiped clean with a
clean, dry, lint-free cloth.
Exterior Parts. Steam-cleam all exterior parts thoroughly before removing. This will make inspection and
disassembly easier.
