TM 5-1940-321-13&P
b. Outboard Engine. The outboard engine must be the correct type and security bolted to the
transom as described in paragraph 4-3c. The outboard engine tilt angle adjustment must be properly set to
ensure the thrust line is parallel to the surface of the water when operating at normal speed and normal load.
In most cases and as a reference point, it is suggested that the tilt adjustment be on the second hole from the
transom.
c.
Fuel.
CAUTION
Do not allow spilled fuel to remain in the craft. If an accidental spill should
occur, the fuel will flow under the flooring. This fuel must be removed
immediately by flushing the boat with very large quantities of water. The
water with the fuel floating on top should be evacuated through the self-
bailers. As soon as possible following the flushing, the boat must be
disassembled, the flooring and boat bottom washed, using detergent and a
brush, and rinsed thoroughly several times.
CAUTION
Always remove excess air from (burp) the collapsible fuel tanks after
th
adding fuel. Unscrew the cap 1/8 turn (counterclockwise) to release the
pressure.
( 1 ) Collapsible fuel tanks, as described in paragraph 3-10, are available in 6 and
18-gallon sizes. Sufficient fuel for the intended operation is carried in one or
more collapsible fuel tanks. After filling the collapsible fuel tanks, it is necessary
th
to purge the excess air from the tank. Turn the cap 1/8 turn counterclockwise
to release the pressure. The cap is than hand tightened. This removes excess
air from the fuel tank. Excess air will expand as the fuel reaches ambient
temperature or as the sun warms the fuel tank. It may be necessary to remove
the excess air again later if the tank appears to expand. This expansion can
cause internal pressure in the tank, which stresses the tank seams and can
result in fuel leaks. The fuel tanks must be secured to the craft to prevent their
movement. The fuel tanks are normally secured near the transom. Do not
position the collapsible fuel tanks near sharp objects. The weight of the fuel in
the collapsible tanks must be correctly distributed with other weight in the craft
about 6 pounds per gallon.
