f. Safety Equipment. Safety related items supplied with each F530 IAB include paddles, air pump,
pressure gauge, a spare valve insert and valve cap and the repair kit. These items should remain aboard at all
times.
4-5. OPERATING PROCEDURES. Safe and efficient operation of the F530 IAB requires that the coxswain
operate within the parameters of the unit standard operating procedures. Operators must be familiar with the
immediate corrective action for leaks in the various valves and know how to patch damaged fabric. Refer to
a.
Capsizing and Righting. Capsizing occurs most often when operating in a surf zone.
Operators must know and practice procedures associated with capsizing, righting the craft, and getting
underway again. The most common causes of capsizing are loss of engine power in surf, coxswain error in
taking a wave too fast, and coxswain error in taking a wave at the wrong angle.
( 1 ) Preventing Capsizing. Keeping crew weight low in the craft improves stability. When
the craft starts to broach due to coxswain should quickly steer so the bow or stern is
perpendicular to the wave. (This may require more throttle for quick reaction.) This
distributes the force of the wave equally along both sides of the craft, reducing the
possibility of capsizing. Crewmembers, particularly those on the high side, can shift
their weight outboard over the buoyancy tube.
