b. Corrective Maintenance. Corrective maintenance for the foot pump is performed by direct
support personnel. Disassemble the foot pump by first removing the collar clamps.
( 1 ) Valve Replacement. Remove the collar clamps and pry under the fabric with a
boning knife to gain access to the valves. Remove and replace the defective
valve. The inflation and deflation valves are different. Scuff the new valves and
the pump body lightly. Clean with toluene and apply 2 coats of neoprene glue
at 5-minute intervals. Assemble, verifying that the new valve is properly seated
in the pump. Apply a thin bead of glue in the groove of the pump body.
Reassemble, verifying that the collar clamp is seated in the groove in the pump
body.
( 2 ) Hose Tips. Damaged hose tips can be removed and replace with new hose
tips. The two hose tips are different. Lightly scuff the new hose tips, clean
with toluene, and glue them to the hose using two coats of neoprene glue at
5-minute intervals.
( 3 ) Fabric Sleeve Replace. Remove both collar clamps and pry away the fabric
from the pump body. Scuff the pump body and edges of the fabric sleeve.
Clean with toluene. Apply two coats of neoprene glue at 5-minute intervals.
Install the new fabric sleeve. Reinstall the collar clamps verifying that they are
seated in the grooves of the pump body.
7-14. REPLACING BOWLINE AND GRAB LINE. Direct support personnel perform bow line and grab
line replacement. The bow line and grab lines should be replaced when damaged or when worn to the
extent that their strength is reduced. The material used is 5/8-inch diameter, 3 strand, and twisted, black
nylon rope. This type of rope will begin to unlay at the cut end unless the end is melted with heat or
whipped with needle and thread. The unlaying will continue until the entire rope is separated. Cutting the
rope with an elective hot knife reduces the tendency for the rope to unlay. Another method is to wrap a
piece of tape temporarily around the rope before cutting. The rope is then cut 1/4-inch below the tape.
The end is sealed by applying flame until the rope end is burning. After burning for a few seconds, the
melted nylon on the rope end can be flattened and fused by pressing a piece of metal against it. The tape
can then be removed. Applying a whipping to the end of the rope after burning the end is a more
permanent method.
a. Bow Line (Figure 7-7). The bowline is attached to the bow handle with an eye splice. The
line is then stretched aft and cut to a length that is one foot short of the transom. This will prevent the line
from fouling the outboard engine if it becomes unhanked while underway. The free end of the bowline
must be heat sealed to prevent unlaying. Whipping may be applied to the end of the line to increase the
service life of the line.
