Figure 7-18. Loosening the Keel Valve Base Nut.
( 3 ) With one hand under the keel, grasp the keel valve base through the fabric. Use
the other hand to remove the base nut.
( 4 ) Allow the valve base to move away from the hole in the fabric until the neoprene
gasket is visible.
( 5 ) Remove the large neoprene valve base gasket from the threaded portion of the
valve base folding it to pull it through the hole in the fabric.
( 6 ) Install a new large neoprene valve base gasket by folding it to pass it through the
hole in the fabric. Verify that the gasket is pressed down completely flat on the
valve base flange. Pull the threaded portion of the valve base through the fabric.
( 7 ) Install the valve base metal compression gasket; then reinstall the keel valve base
nut. Tighten it moderately using the collar nut spanner. Avoid tightening to the
extent that the valve base turns inside the keel.
( 8 ) Reinstall the metal valve insert and inflate the keel to 220 mbar (3.2 psi). Using the
collar nut spanner, verify that the keel valve base nut is moderately tight. Replace
the metal valve cap.
( 9 ) Check for leaks around the keel valve using the air leak test (chapter 6, paragraph
6-3).
