Refer to the following paragraphs in chapters 5 and 7 for servicing the valve:
Cleaning and Lubrication, paragraph 5-13
Leak Corrective Maintenance, paragraph 7-9
Replacing Stud, Paragraph 7-18c
Regrinding Valve, paragraph 7-18b
Replacing Inner Neoprene Washer, paragraph 7-18d
Removing and replacing the intercommunicating valve requires cutting the
buoyancy tube fabric which must then be repaired by applying an inner and outer
patch. A thorough knowledge of the repair procedures in Appendix F is required.
Use the following procedure:
( 1 ) If not yet accomplished, remove the metal valve insert and the male portion to
the valve as described in chapter 5, paragraph 5-13.
( 2 ) Feel through the fabric to locate the hose which connects the
intercommunicating valve to the baffle between compartments. Refer to figure
7-15.
( 3 ) Make a 7-inch long incision in the boat buoyancy tube on the opposite side of
the valve from the baffle. See figure 7-15. Cut away from any seams, lacing
cuffs or D-rings.
NOTE:
The valve position must be marked before it is moved. This is to ensure that the
new valve is returned to the original position and not rotated. Valve position
affects airflow through the hose.
